How are taxes calculated?
Taxes are calculated daily and each individual component tax is rounded to the nearest penny each day.
It must be done this way because lodging is calculated daily (night audit etc.). As a result, the taxes must be calculated daily as well.
They must each be calculated individually because if they were not, we would have partial cents being carried around in the database which can be problematic.
Below is an example of how taxes are calculated.

In unit 2 we can see rounding errors due to the specific rate being charged in the unit combined with the various tax percentages.
Other units calculate true to the penny because of the rate and tax combos either calculating exactly to a penny or because two taxes round up and two round down.
If each of the individual taxes multiplied by a given rate came out to $5.0049 you can see how the calculated tax would be 20.0196 but the rounded calculation would be 20.00 since 5.0049 always rounds down to 5.00.
The state or other taxing agency understands that rounding errors exist and are only concerned with the overall total taxable sales and the overall total tax collected. These we track to the penny in every case.
Fractions of.00 through .49 are rounded down and fractions of .50 to .99 are rounded up as per standard rounding practice. Some may be a few pennies high or a few pennies low per day depending on how many taxes are involved in the calculation and the rate being charged but the overall totals should come out nearly even based on averages.
