RezOvation GT, the new software inspired by Guest Tracker, is now available! Click here for details.

Here's what our users have to say:

"I love the fact that RezOvation GT is so similar to Guest Tracker, making it easy to learn. It feels familiar, and incorporates lots of innkeeper feedback. Being able to customize reports is key; GT does exactly what we need it to do!" -- Lyn, Cornell Inn, Lenox, MA

"The import from Guest Tracker went very smoothly and I compliment your organization." -- Ron Vergoz, Still Bay Resort, Diamond Point, NY

How can I check my backup disks for errors?

Overview
Floppy disks are an inexpensive and easy medium to use for backing up your Guest Tracker database. However, they are also very susceptible to developing errors which can render the disk unreadable and thereby cause some major headaches if you're ever in a situation where you need to restore your database from that floppy disk!

When a disk develops errors, a sector of the floppy disk becomes unreadable by the computer, and thus the Guest Tracker Backup program and Microsoft® Windows® cannot restore the data when it is attempted. On the other hand, you will still be able to write and backup onto that same bad disk without any errors. This makes it almost impossible to see the problem until it is too late (this is a feature/bug of Windows, NOT Guest Tracker).

It is for this reason that RezOvation recommends (1.) having multiple backup disks or use additional alternative backup procedures and (2.) that you scan your backup disks for errors periodically using the Scandisk utility in Microsoft® Windows®.

Scandisk will check your disks to make sure that they are in good working condition. If you are still using Windows 3.x and your computer has DOS version 6.2 or greater, you can run this utility in DOS mode.

Step-By-Step
1.) Put your floppy disk into your disk drive.
2.) Double Click on the My Computer icon on your desktop.

3.) Click ONCE on your Floppy Drive icon so it becomes highlighted as in the following graphic. (A single RIGHT-CLICK will also work here and should present the same menu options that you'll see in Step 4.)

4.) Click on the File menu at the top of the My Computer window. Then click on the Properties option.

File: Properties

5.) Click on the Tools tab at the top of the properties window and then click the Check Now button.

6.) You should now be in the Scandisk window. Set the Type of Test to "Thorough" and make sure that there is NOT a check in the Automatically fix errors check box as shown in the following graphic.

7.) Hit the Start button at the bottom of the window. Scandisk will take about 2-5 minutes per disk and when it's finished, it should give you a message similar to the following. The most important information on the Scandisk Results is the number of "bytes in bad sectors" which should always be equal to 0. If it is not equal to 0, we recommend using a different disk for Guest Tracker Backups as this disk has some bad spots on it.

IMPORTANT - PLEASE READ
If you have ANY ERRORS or WARNINGS come up during the Scandisk process, you can cancel the Scandisk operation and throw that disk away! DO NOT use that disk for Guest Tracker Backups as the disk has suffered some damage and that could render the contents of the disk unreadable.

We recommend running Scandisk on your disks prior to using them as backup disks, EVEN IF THEY ARE BRAND NEW (Floppy disks can have errors on them right out of the box, believe it or not)! Also, run Scandisk on them at least once every 2 months or so thereafter to be sure your disks are in good condition. Floppy disks can develop bad sectors at any time so it is important to check them regularly and to replace them periodically.

Don't risk losing your entire database to a bad floppy disk! Be proactive about checking your disks for errors.

NOTE: If you consistently have errors on your floppy disks, you may have a Hardware problem with your Floppy Disk Drive and you will want to get that checked out by a local computer repair shop or where you bought the computer.
