Are there any known issues with sending e-mail from Guest Tracker?

Overview
Although there should be no problems sending e-mail from Guest Tracker with most services, there are some potential issues you should be aware of. Some services have their own proprietary dial-up software or e-mail program. Others may require special handling of messages sent to them. Here are a few of the difficulties that have been encountered and (if available) the solution or workaround to deal with each.
Known Issues
1) Some Internet Service Providers (ISPs) require their own proprietary dial-up software.
Examples of this practice include America Online (AOL) and the Microsoft Network (MSN), both of whom require you to log on to their service by double-clicking on their icon.

Solution:
Do not use the Dial-Up Networking feature in Guest Tracker. You will need to connect to this sort of service manually before you can send anything out through them.

2) Some ISPs do not allow public use of their SMTP server.
This means that they do not have an outgoing mail serer address that can be accessed by any third party software. AOL is an example of a company that does not allow anyone to send e-mail through them with any program other than their own software. Guest Tracker (and all other e-mail capable programs) will not be able to send e-mail out if it can not be provided with a valid SMTP server.

Solution:
There are two possible solutions. You could contact the ISP and see if there is any way to obtain access to a SMTP server through them. For instance, AOL does provide SMTP server access to certain business accounts. (Availability seems to be different in different areas.) Another solution is to purchase an e-mail account from a different ISP. E-mail only accounts are usually very reasonably priced.
(One other possible solution involves using a public SMTP server. These tend to be somewhat unreliable, but can be found by searching for them on the Internet.)

3) Some ISPs require e-mail authentication to send e-mail through their server.
E-mail authentication is an added layer of security which requires a username and password to be sent to the server each time an e-mail gets sent. This is a relatively new idea with few standards yet.

Solution:
Download and install the Guest Tracker 3.1 Update.

Or upgrade to Guest Tracker Pro 3.5

4) Some ISPs require non-standard usernames.
For example, Earthlink requires a full e-mail address (such as "email@earthlink.net") as it's username. Guest Tracker is unable to read certain symbols correctly in the context of a username, such as the "@" symbol. This can prevent the Dial-Up Networking from being able to connect properly.

Solution:
Do not use the Dial-Up Networking feature in Guest Tracker. You will need to connect to this sort of service manually before you can send anything out through them.
