| Overview |
| Restoring
data from a backup needs to be done when you
lose your data due to a virus or hard drive
problems, when you reload your computer, or
when moving Guest Tracker from one computer
to another.
Restoring a backup file from a floppy disk
is covered in your Guest Tracker User's Guide
on page 289 and the process is fundamentally
the same whether you are restoring from a
hard drive, a network location, a Zip drive,
or other backup method.
If you are restoring from a CD, there are one
or two other steps that may need to
be done first. |
| Step
by Step |
| 1.) |
Exit
completely out of Guest Tracker and the Web
Module. If the restore will be from a floppy
disk, insert the disk now. |
| 2.) |
The
Restore program is part of the Backup program.
Start the Backup program from the Windows Start
Menu by clicking START, going to PROGRAMS,
finding the GUEST TRACKER folder, and then
clicking on BACKUP (or GT BACKUP or BACKUP
AND RESTORE, depending on your version of Guest
Tracker). |
| 3.) |
In
the Backup window, click the RESTORE button.

|
| 4.) |
The
Restore From window will appear.

|
| 5.) |
To
restore from a floppy drive, change the FROM
to "Drive a:" by clicking on the
dot beside the name. Otherwise, click on "Path" and
set the "From:" line to show the
proper path to the backup file. In the example,
the backup file is stored in the "C:\TRACKER" directory.
If the backup file was saved by itself on
a Zip drive that uses the letter D, then
the From would be "D:\".
|
| 6.) |
Make
sure the destination (the "To:" line)
shows the proper path to the database directory.
This is usually "C:\TRACKER" as shown. |
| 7.) |
In
the "Include" box, only check off
the items that should be restored. Database: This is the Guest Tracker database,
where all of the people and reservation information
is stored.
Reports: These are the report templates and
form letters that exist in your database.
Letters: These are any unique copies of form
letters that have been saved with your database. |
| 8.) |
When
all items are properly set, click the OK button
to begin the restore process.
If a Guest Tracker database already exists
in the location being restored to, the program
will confirm that it should replace it with
the one being restored from.
If the destination directory shown in the "To:" line
does not exist, the program will ask it it
should be created and (if yes) will attempt
to do so. |
| 9.) |
A
status bar will indicate the progress of the
restore. When finished, a message box will
appear to show what was completed.

If
Restoring From A CD |
| There
are two extra steps involved in restoring from
a backup made to a CD. Files on CD-ROM disks
are all READ-ONLY. This makes it impossible
for the Guest Tracker restore program to properly
restore directly from the backup file on the
CD. This problem is simply resolved by the
following. |
| 1.) |
COPY THE FILE TO
THE HARD DRIVE.
Browse through the My Computer icon to find
the CD drive. Open the CD drive to find the
backup file (TRACKER.ZIP) and right-click on
it. Then click COPY.

Next, browse to your Tracker folder or an
empty folder on your hard drive and open
it up. Then click EDIT and PASTE.

|
| 2.) |
Now that the file
is copied to the hard drive, it can probably
be restored from. However, the file may still
be READ-ONLY. If this is the case, the attribute
needs to be changed.
Right-click on the file and then click on
Properties.

In the Properties window* make sure the
READ-ONLY attribute is unchecked.

* Attributes are located on the General
Tab of the Properties Window and look slightly
different in each version of Windows.
