Can I use my CD-RW drive from Windows XP?

Overview

Windows XP has a special CD-burning program built in to it. This program is a lite version of Roxio's Easy CD Creator. It allows you to copy items into a temporary folder location, and then burn the contents of that folder to a CD. This software does not provide the direct access to a CD-RW required by Guest Tracker's back program.

Here are some of the ways you can work with XP to make backups of your Guest Tracker data.

Back Up The Entire Folder
1.) Using Windows XP to back up the entire database directory to a CD-RW is fairly simple. Be sure that you have exited out of Guest Tracker and then double-click the My Computer icon on your desktop.

2.) Double-click on your local hard disk and find the folder you keep your database in (probably Tracker).

3.) Right-click on the database folder to show a pop-up menu. Move to the "Send To:" line and then select the CD-RW drive.

4.) Click the BACK button in the upper-left corner Back then double-click on the CD-RW drive icon.

5.) In the CD-RW directory window, in the upper-left corner, click on FILE and then on "Write these files to CD".

6.) Follow the instructions provided by Windows XP's CD-Wizard to complete the process. When it finishes, the whole database folder should be copied on to the CD-RW disk.
Back Up Just The Backup File
1.) Run the Guest Tracker backup program and backup to a new path on your hard drive. For example, back up to C:\HOLDAREA.
2.) Locate the folder on your hard drive by double-clicking on the My Computer icon, then on the hard drive, and finally on the new folder that was created.
3.) There should be one file in this folder. It is named TRACKER.ZIP. Right-click on it and then follow the SEND TO and CD burning instructions from above.
4.) Writing the backup file to the CD in this manner has the same result as if Guest Tracker Backup had been run and had saved the file to a CD-RW disk.
Upgrade The CD-RW Software
There are several manufacturers who make CD-RW software that can write directly to a CD as if were a regular disk type. Upgrading to the full version of Easy CD Creator from Roxio is one way to gain this capability. Getting software like Nero Burning ROM from Ahead Software or a program from one of the other manufacturers is also an option. The important thing to look for when upgrading is a Direct CD Access capability.
